TAKAHASHI SHIHAN - A MAN OF VISION

Takahashi Shihan first came to Australia in 1972 at the invitation of the Australian Shotokan Karate Association, remaining here for a period of two years. For most of that time he was based in Brisbane where he opened a Dojo in the Valley.

When it became obvious that A.S.K.A. in its form at that time was unworkable, Takahashi Shihan formed J.K.A. of Australia along the lines of our parent body J.K.A. and invited all A.S.K.A. Dojos to join.

All Member Dojo at that time received a sanction from J.K.A. Honbu Dojo that Takahashi Shihan was J.K.A. representative in Australia, with his Dojo as headquarters. This sanction has never been revoked. Our first international representative team travelled to Japan for the International Amateur Karate Federation World Championships in 1977, with thirteen members spending three weeks training and competing.

Takahashi Shihan has continued to come to Australia during his two vacations each year, developing our knowledge of Karate-Do and advising the executive, to keep J.K.A. of Australia in line with international developments. His commitment in time, and effort, provided a model for those who continue to work for J.K.A. of Australia.

We have sent teams to international competitions in 1977, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1996,1998, 2000, 2004, hosted the 2nd World Shoto Cup in Brisbane in 1988, and represented at many other tournaments. In fact, in September 2004 Australia had it’s best result at a World Cup with a 3rd place in Junior kumite and a 4th place in Women’s Team Kata, with several members making finals. When groups travelled to Japan, Takahashi Shihan has arranged tours, training and entertainment, as well as financial support for our members, behind the scenes, so that only a few officials understand the extent of this help.

Takahashi Shihan is a graduate of the JKA Instructor Course, a full-time school of karate at JKA Headquarters in Tokyo where intensive study and practice produce karateka of the highest calibre who are sent overseas to develop karate in line with JKA policy. He spends approx. 4 months each year touring Australia, visiting Dojos in every State, and we are extremely fortunate to have an instructor of such personality and commitment come to us on a regular basis.

In recognition of Shihan’s 30 year commitment to JKA in Australia, in 2003 he was awarded the OAM (Order of Australia Medal) by our Prime Minister, John Howard. All members of JKA were exceptionally pleased and proud to have our Chief Instructor awarded this very high honour.

In October 2006, Shihan successfully graded to 8th Dan Black Belt at the Autumn International Training Seminar held in Tokyo, Japan.
