THE FUNAKOSHI GICHIN CUP
10TH WORLD KARATE-DO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006
The Japan Karate Association of Australia is both pleased and honoured to have been requested
to host a 10th World Shoto Cup in 2006 by the Japan Karate Association, Tokyo, Japan, at the request of the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The JKA World Federation has decided that the Championships will be known as the Funakoshi Gichin Cup 10th World Karate-do Championships, in honour of the founder of Shotokan karate, Funakoshi Gichin, and will be one of the events celebrating the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange, commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the 1976 Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation Between Australia and Japan.
The Chairman of the Japan Karate Association of Australia Sensei John Russo, cordially invites all eligible members of the JKA from all 116 JKA countries to attend this special tournament. Initial letters of invitation have been mailed to representatives of each JKA country, which will be followed by full information and nomination packages in early 2006.

The Funakoshi Gichin Cup 10th World Karate-Do Championships is the forum to bring countries together to practice the art of karate and provide the arena for a professional and successful world class event in the true spirit of karate-do. This event will forge strong relationships between all countries honouring Japan Karate Association and its commitment to the development of the sport throughout the world. Karate-do will engender the pursuit of excellence in spirit and mind leading and educating those who honour the art.
The Japan Karate Association is the recognised heir to the Shotokan karate tradition founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi, and encompasses 116 member countries worldwide. JKA Australia was established in 1972 and has been sending teams to compete at International events since. JKA has been regularly hosting a world karate championship competition for Shotokan karate-ka since 1985, which is known as the Shoto World Cup Karate Championships.

The Funakoshi Gichin Cup 10th World Karate-do Championships will be held in Sydney from 14th ~ 20th August 2006, at the State Sports Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park. JKA Australia is looking forward to hosting this special event and looks forward to welcoming JKA exponents from all over the world to Sydney in 2006. Please note: -This competition is open only to members of the JKA, and representatives must provide JKA Dan Certificate numbers on nomination forms as proof of rank and JKA affiliation.
